Reframed invitation to collaborators
We are exploring a usable interface between established systems/organizational theory and practitioners’ real diagnostic work, not proposing a replacement for VSM, IAD, 4EM, ECM, or ArchiMate. The research question is whether progressive disclosure and problem-led procedures improve justified diagnoses and interventions for people without specialist theoretical training.
Requested expertise and critical comparison
| Expertise | Particularly valuable challenge |
|---|---|
| VSM / Espejo ECM scholars | What do our simplified diagrams obscure, and which existing cybernetic practices already solve accessibility? |
| Ostrom IAD / institutional analysts | Can prompts about rights, information and rules preserve institutional precision for novices? |
| 4EM / enterprise architects | Which goal, rule, actor and process views are redundant with mature enterprise modeling practice? |
| HCI / information visualization | What level of progressive disclosure best reduces effort without causing false conclusions? |
| Education / assessment | How to assess independent learning, delayed transfer, and time-to-competence? |
| Causal inference | Which shortcuts create misleading feedback/causal diagrams? |
| Organizational action research | Can teams use the procedure responsibly with contested purposes and power asymmetries? |
Proposed collaboration artifact
A comparative worked case, initially journalism/platform governance or a workplace decision-rights problem, containing:
- The System Canvas minimum view and optional focused drill-downs.
- Analyses by experts using IAD, VSM/ECM and 4EM.
- A structured crosswalk: what is equivalent, omitted, newly combined or misleading?
- A small pilot with novice practitioners and blind assessment.
- Explicit findings on the boundary between helpful simplification and unacceptable loss of explanatory power.
The strongest contribution may be pedagogical and methodological rather than foundationally theoretical. A convincing null result would also sharpen the framework.
Purpose
Invite critique and co-development of a provisional diagnostic, redesign and teaching method—not endorsement of a new universal formal theory.
Where expert review is needed
| Expertise | Questions / proposed contribution |
|---|---|
| Systems / cybernetics | Correct feedback, viability and recursive-governance procedures |
| Institutional research | Compare with Ostrom IAD, VSM and 4EM; improve authority mapping |
| Game theory | Identify when strategic modeling adds value and when it misleads |
| Epistemology and journalism | Source provenance, uncertainty, misinformation and corrections |
| Causal inference | Detect unfounded arrows, design tests and counterfactuals |
| HCI and education | Visual grammar, progressive teaching and independent transfer |
| Ethics / political theory | Legitimacy, conflicting goals, power and affected-party inclusion |
Specific requests
- Which theoretical distinctions are mistaken, redundant or missing?
- What established method already does the same job?
- Which procedures can be derived without heavy mathematical prerequisites?
- How can novices distinguish a genuine mechanism from a coherent narrative?
- How should a method stop infinite recursive analysis?
- Which real case and ethical evaluation would provide the sharpest test?
Review packets
Chess rankings; newsroom/platform distribution; dating platform incentives; worker decision rights; municipal service maintenance. Each packet must separate observed facts, hypotheses, normative assumptions and proposed interventions.
Deliverables
An annotated critique, recommended primary sources, one procedural improvement, one counterexample and one observable success/failure criterion. Preserve disagreements and attribution.
Collaboration model
Research track refines claims; practitioner track pilots techniques; educational track tests teachability. Applications feed revisions without retroactively proving the thesis.
